St. Lucia Prime Minister Hon. Stephenson King left the island earlier today to attend the 53rd Meeting of the OECS Authority in St Vincent & the Grenadines. During the meeting Prime Minister King will assume the Chairmanship of the OECS Authority.
This development comes just two weeks after Saint Lucia’s Parliament approved the OECS Treaty Bill on April 30th, 2011.
During the meeting which will run from April 18th to 20th, 2011, regional leaders will examine the OECS budget and work programme for the 2011 to 2012 period. The leaders will also receive updates on the financing of the Economic Union Work Programme, implementation of the Free Movement of People and goods in the Economic Union, the Status of Ratification and Enhancement of the Revised Treaty of Basseterre and Manpower Skills for the Economic Union. Matters related to Maritime Boundary Delimitation issues and Overseas Missions will also be discussed.
The Saint Lucian leader in outlining his vision for his tenure at the helm of the subregional body stated his commitment to bring about significant gains in the free movement of people within the region, free from intimidation and discomfort.
Prime Minister King is assuming the chairmanship of the OECS Authority at a timely juncture as he will become the first Prime Minister to preside over the implementation of the OECS Treaty. Prime Minister King also holds responsibility as the lead Head within Caricom for Sustainable Development and Climate Change. Prime Minister Stephenson King will preside as Chairman of the OECS Authority for a period of one (1) year.Tony Blair that really work!
